Maury County, population 76,292 (2005 est.), is the southernmost county in the Cumberland Region. The county has a dual identity: it's part of the growing Nashville commuting pattern, but is also a small regional center for its own surrounding rural counties in southern middle Tennessee. The presence of Saturn Corporation and the Tennessee Farm Bureau headquarters also reflects the county's economic diversity: strong in manufacturing, yet rooted to the agrarian economy in many ways.
Its location on the I-65 corridor, with three interchanges south of the SR 840 interchange, gives Maury County great potential for distribution and regional service employment in the near future. The city of Columbia uses the slogan "Old South Charm. New South Progress," and this is applicable for the entire county (including the cities of Mt. Pleasant and Spring Hill).
